Awaara is Avare in Türkish and Vagabond in English

Awaara is Avare in Türkish and Vagabond in English 

My father told me a few times of a movie he watched when he was about five years old.   He went in detail of how the movie and the song within that movie was such a big smash hit.  He even sang verses from the song.  

Today, I heard the song in that movie and therefore looked up the movie on YouTube.  My father came to my mind...
 My father was right, the song and movie was very entertaining and I wanted to inform everyone who might never have known of this jewel of a movie.  

Awara

Awaara was a Brilliant Indian movie made in the year 1951.  It is also titled the Vagabond in many western countries.  It is directed, produced and stars the legendary Raj Kapoor.  The film's music was composed by Shantar Jaikishan, and the main titled song Awaara was sung by Mukesh, but lip-singed in the movie by Raj Kapoor.

The film centers on the life of poor vagabond Raj (Kapoor) and his love interest, who comes from a wealthy and elite family.  

The film was an overnight sensation in South Asia, and found success abroad in the rest of the world.  In particular, the song Awaara, which was sung by Mukesh with lyrics by Shailendra, became hugely popular across Indian subcontinent and surrounding countries of Soviet Union, China, Turkey and Afghanistan.  

The film was also nominated for the Grand Prize of the Cannes Film Festival in the year 1953.  Owing to its popularity in so many countries, the film is a candidate for most successful film of all time and has been included in the All-time 100 Greatest films by Time magazine.

Montreal in July

Montreal in July

We were in Montreal on July 23, 2017, since we were connecting to Turkish Airlines flight to Istanbul at 11:05 pm.  

Montreal Airport

We stayed in Montreal for 15 hours and even though that sounds like a long delay, it did not feel as long, since it was the first time I stepped foot in Montreal airport, and everything looked welcoming.  

One very important and positive point to note was that Montreal airport was more compact (smaller) than Toronto airport, therefore we did not have to travel a long distance inside the airport to catch the next flight.   We liked this.  Sometimes smaller is better.

The below image was found from the internet.  This website used the image since the children (of war-torn Syria) in the image were thought to be looking into the camera wanting and hoping for a bright future to come, where they can be happy and safe with family and friends.  The wishing of a bright future by the children is similar to what this website is hoping for, which is a bright future of internet users visiting the site to read informative articles.  We are hoping both good wishes come to fruition.

Financing and Rejection 

Some banks are ready to approve a customer when a mortgage is wanted.  One assumes that when the customer deals with the same bank for many years, the process would allow the long-time customer to receive the mortgage.  

I have experienced the following ordeal where the bank I dealt with did not approve the re-financing of my mortgage, but a bank I never dealt with previously approved it, interesting is it not?

Here is the story:

I approached my bank, and after a few weeks (almost one month) of back and forth, I was declined a mortgage (re-financing of a mortgage).  Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) was my bank and one would assume that my bank was there to help me and other individuals.  That is not the case I find out, it is all about the banks aligning their own interests.   

Dominion Lending Institute

After my rejection, I went to Dominion Lending Institute.  This institute, I have dealt with years prior, but never talked to them in over ten years, and guess what?  They approved my mortgage, just like that.  You believe that? 

I ask now, why would a customer who has dealt with the same bank for many years still continue to bank at a bank that is not there to help customers when help is required?

 Some people will respond and write that banking policy did not allow the approval in one bank, while the other banks policy did.  I believe this rational. can be properly justified, but a customer looks at the bottom line, which is my bank for many years was not able to approve my mortgage, while a stranger bank was able to.  

Move your business

What I did next was rather satisfying for me, I moved my business (bank account etc.) from my old bank to the bank that approved my mortgage.  

I really feel RBC needs to treat me and others with more serious intentions, proper decision structure and respect.   Also, I speak mostly for myself, but do feel this is the new trend, which is customers are not loyal any longer, therefore try to keep them as a customer, since they will move their business else where when they are not dealt with full integrity and honesty.  

New vision

A long term new vision needs to be discussed from top, and passed down to employees at RBC.

Ahmet Kaya's Legacy

Ahmet Kaya's Legacy

I'm proud to come from the Anatolian land, however there are many troubles in this old country/area.  Here is an example.  

Ahmet Kaya was at one time the number one seller for fantasy/folk/turko rock music, and he was one of my favourite.  

The problem (for him) was he was Kurdish.   Turkey is a country of close to 70 million, and of that number about 20 million are Kurds.   

In the olden days, Turks and Kurds, and other ethnic groups within this nation fought side by side against the imperial powers.  However, since about the mid 1970s, there is an emphasis on what your back ground is in Turkey. This divide got worse, before slowly getting better now.  

But in 1999 this is what happened to Ahmet Kaya.

He went on a show, and declared that in his future album, he was going to sing a song in Kurdish, this became a big deal and eventually he was declared that he insulted the Turkish identity and was going to be jailed, therefore he took off to France.   This all happened while he was the number one singer in Turkey.  

In France, until is death only a short year later, he kept telling the Turkish authorities that he had not said anything wrong and he declared that he wanted to come back to his country as he missed his country, friends, family etc.   However, the Turkish government did not forgive him and advised him that his prison sentence would stand.   

Ahmet Kaya died in October of the year 2000 and his wife said that he died of the heartache he had for his country.   This really upset me and many folks back then and even now.   The Turkish government has not apologized for this event yet and there are repeated requests by Kurds, his family and friends.  

My son is named after him.   My side of the family does not have any Kurdish, we have a bit of Syrian from about 7 generations back and my parents can still speak levantine Arabic, I can a bit...

My wife's grandmother was Kurdish, therefore my son is one forth Kurdish now.  My son Ahmet is one forth as following: 

Kurdish, Turkish, Canadian and Arabic, I'm very proud of this.

Back to Ahmet Kaya, because of his stand with  the Turkish government, Kurdish language is recognized now and there is even a Kurdish radio/TV and so on.  He paved the way for many within this country.   

May he rest in peace.

Turkiye Futbol Direktoru Fatih Terim, Alacati'da ortaligi birbirine kattı.  Damadı ve bir korumasi ile birlikte damadina ait restoranin yanindaki Yuzevler'e giden Fatih Terim, hem Yuzevler'in sabihini hem de 5 calisanini darp etti.

Ahmet Kaya'nin 'Sen insansin' sarkisinin sozlerini alta yazmak istedim bugun.  

Sarki sozlerini yazmadan once sunu bilmenizde fayda var.  Sarkinin sozleri 'Lilisan' adli siirinden degerlendirilmis.  Bu siiri yazan ustadi bazi gencler tanimaz, ve belirtmek isterimki bizim milli degerimiz Attila Ilhan tarafindan yazilmistir.  1946 yilinda yayinlanan 'Duvar' adli siir kitabinda dahildir.

I came by the below YouTube video which shows a mischievous reporter asking teenagers and young adults about a certain subject matter.

I was not very happy about the video as it showed the future generation as ignorant and stupid.  However, I would like to step forward and try to support and explain about these young adults in this video by writing the following:

Young adults do not vote, 

Young adults do not watch the news,

Young adults drink and party on a Friday night,

(I must add the following "most young adults" to the above sentences)

I mention Friday night since in the video it looks like the reporter is walking around on a Friday night asking questions to these kids/students/teenagers who are clearly intoxicated, on a subject matter that they do not care for.  

This is not the right question Mr Reporter should be asking...

Ask these young adults what Tom Cruise's (or Brad Pitt's) pet hamsters name is, and they will know that since they are focused on information that is not relevant to some, but important to them...

Unfair to the teenagers/young adults here.

Ustad Kadir Misiroglu

Ustad Kadir Misiroglu

Mr Kadir Misiroglu was born in the northern city of Trabzon, in the town of Akcaabat, on the following date of January 24, 1933.  He is a history researcher, who has brought forth well researched information regarding Turkey, Ottoman Empire, Ataturk (founder of the Turkish Republic), Anatolia and neighbouring lands, Islands in the Aegean Sea, Armenian conflict/war and the war of independence.  

All the researched topics by Mr Misiroglu have information that conflict with the previous version given by the Turkish republic.  

I follow him on YouTube, but he only speaks Turkish, for people of other languages, obviously this is a problem/dilemma.   My future project is to blog/vlog regarding some of the important information he has brought forth.

Pepi Longsocks

Pepi Longsocks

Watching old SCTV episodes are a past time of mine.   SCTV is a Canadian show from the mid 1970s to early 1980s.  It is brilliantly funny, and I recommend this show wholeheartedly.  

I wanted to analyze and give a constructive review of one of the episodes of SCTV, titled Pepi Longsocks, here is a short link of a YouTube episode below:

Watching Pepi when I was a kid, I did not get the reference to other cultures.  But watching this and other episodes of SCTV now, I actually think that the references are bang-on and done very good, especially with this one.  

Here are a few points I want to make:

1, in this episode, it is supposedly Bulgaria, and me born around the Balkans, I remember watching old Turkish movies (still watching them now I must add), many of the older films are out of sink with the picture and the sound, and one learns to just accept this while watching, but in this episode/video, it is wickedly funny, done purposely,

2, outfits were nailed bang on; I have actually been to Sofya in 1988 (Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria) and they actually dressed almost like this in the country side of the capital city,

3, the name Pepi; don't know if Bulgarians have this name in use, most of the ones I know are either named Dimitri or Constantin, but only a minor issue here,

3, John Candy was in my opinion the most under-rated actor in Hollywood, watching him here brings to me nice memories of my simple childhood, he does this to me as I like him and admire him greatly.   I have nothing but good to say about him, may he rest in peace.

Last Day of Work

Last Day of Work until end of August

Today, July 13, 2017 is my last day of work, until the end of summer, I am absolutely delighted about this.  

I am looking forward to the coming days of not having to go to work, driving to downtown, and just exiting out of the 9 to 5 schedule.  

What will I do during my time off?

Absolutely nothing is my answer, however we all know that I might be more busy during my days off trying to complete stuff, get errands done etc.  

I hope all of you have a safe, fun and relaxing summer.

Başbakan Erdoğan, ’Gezi’de bize saldıranlar kimse, o gün Ahmet Kaya’ya saldıranlar da onlardır’ dedi. Erdoğan, Akil İnsanlar heyetinde olan ’O esnada tuvaletteydim’ diyen Kadir İnanır’a da ’Yalancının mumu söndü, görüntüler ortada’ dedi.

Başbakan Erdoğan Diyarbakır'da yaptığı konuşmada Ahmet Kaya'nın yaşadığı o talihsiz olaya değindi. Bugün de MHP Lideri Devlet Bahçeli'nin Ahmet Kaya eleştirilerinden sonra grup toplantısında Ahmet Kaya'yı tekrar gündeme getiren Başbakan Erdoğan, bu kez o gecede Ahmet Kaya'ya tepki gösteren sanatçıları hedef aldı.

Diyarbakır'da Mesud Barzani ile Başbakan Erdoğan'ın buluşmasında Barış sürecine destek vermek için Şivan Perver ile düet yapan İbrahim Tatlıses de o gece Ahmet Kaya'yı savunmamıştı. Hükümetin Çözüm Süreci'nde Akil İnsan olarak belirlediği Kadir İnanır da o gece Ahmet Kaya'ya saldırı esnasında tuvalette olduğunu söylemişti. Ayrıca Başbakan Erdoğan ve hükümet üyelerinin Somali'ye yaptığı gezi esnasında Somali'ye giden Ajda Pekkan da o gece Onuncu Yıl Marşını söyleyenler arasında yer almıştı.

Serdar Ortaç: Ahmet Kaya’nın konuşmasının ardından sahneye çıkarak 10. Yıl Marşı’nı söyleten ve ‘Bu vatan bizim, başkalarının değil’ diyen popçu..

  

Ortaç, bu konuda yıllar sonra özür diledi ve ‘O zaman gaza geldim. Faturasını ödedim. Ama çatal atmadım. Attıysam elim kırılsın” dedi. 

  

Gezi Parkı eylemlerine neden destek verilmediğisorulduğunda ise   "Aklım ve mantığım bana 'Apolitik ol, hiçbir şeye karışma' diyor. Eskiden bu işlere çok karışırdım ama başım çok ağrıdı. Artık bu saatten sonra paramı biriktirip ölümü bekleyeceğim." dedi. 

  

Adnan Şenses: Ödül gecesinde 10. Yıl Marşı korosunun en ateşli solisti.  

  

Adnan Şenses için ‘Adnan Abi’ diyen Erdoğan’ın bu sevgisi karşılıksız değil. Adnan Şenses de Erdoğan için ‘Allah’ın bu ülkeye bir lütfu’ diyor. 

  

Gezi Parkı eylemleri için ise  ”Ben böyle siyasi durumlara karışmam, sadece işime bakarım” dedi. 

  

Osman Yağmurdereli: Ödül gecesinde bulunan isimlerden biri. 10. Yıl Marşı’nın ardından sahnede koro halinde ‘Bir başkadır benim memleketim’ şarkısını söyleyenler arasında yer aldı. 2007 yılında AKP’den milletvekili seçilerek TBMM’ye girdi. Bir yıl sonra hayatını kaybetti.  

  

Reha Muhtar: Ödül gecesinde sanatçıları sahneye davet ederek 'Bir Başkadır Benim Memleketim' şarkısını hep bir ağızdan okumalarını isteyen ve kendisi de eşlik eden gazeteci. 

  

Gezi Parkı eylemleri sırasında  "Gezi Parkı olayları üzerinden Başbakan Erdoğan'a oyun oynandığını, aynı oyunun zamanında Ecevit'e de oynandığını ve eylemlerin asıl hedefinin Erdoğan'ı devirmek" olduğunu savundu. 

  

Kadir İnanır: Ödül töreninde bulunan isimlerden biri. Ahmet Kaya o sözleri söylemeden önce yanına giderek elini sıkıyor. O gece için yıllar sonra yaptığı açıklamada ‘3-5 yavşak zibidinin haddine mi benim arkadaşıma çatal-bıçak atmak. O olayların olduğu esnada içeride değildim. Orada olsam gereğini yapardım’ dedi. 

  

Başbakan Erdoğan tarafından oluşturulan ‘Akil İnsanlar Heyeti’nde yer alan Kadir İnanır, Gezi Parkı eylemlerini desteklemedi ancak "Demokratik hak talebiyle hareket eden kitlelere yönelik alınacak tavır asla zor kullanmak olmamalıdır" diyerek kaygısını dile getirdi. 

  

Muazzez Ersoy: Ahmet Kaya’nın şarkılarla susturulduğu gecenin ‘vatansever korosu’nda yer alan isim. Başbakan Erdoğan’la olan yakın dostluğu biliniyor. AKP tarafından düzenlenen özel gecelerin vazgeçilmez solisti.  

  

Ajda Pekkan: MGD Ödül Gecesi’nde 10. Yıl Marşı’nı okutan Serdar Ortaç’ı yanaklarını okşayarak tebrik eden Megastar! 

  

Başbakan Erdoğan’ın Somali gezisine katılan sanatçılardan biri. Erdoğan için hazırlanan ‘Usta’nın Hikayesi’ belgeselinde Erdoğan’dan övgüyle söz eden sançtılar arasında yer aldı.  

  

Gezi Parkı eylemleri hakkında hiçbir açıklama yapmamakla eleştirilen Pekkan  "Gezi Parkı'nda yaşananlarla ilgili tavır almayan sanatçılar neredeyse linç edilecek. Ben tavır almak kadar tavır almadım da. 'Gezi Parkı korunsun' demek kadar, 'Topçu Kışlası yapılsın' demenin de demokratik bir hak olduğunu düşünüyorum. Bu saatten sonra gidip orada görünmek ve poz vermenin de çok samimi olacağını düşünmüyorum" sözleriyle kendisini savundu. 

  

Mahsun Kırmızıgül: Ahmet Kaya Kürtçe klip çekeceğini açıkladığı için linç edilirken, sahnede 10. Yıl Marşı’nı söyledi.  

  

Kırmızıgül aradan yıllar sonra Kürtçe şarkı söyledi, klip çekti.  

  

Gezi Parkı eylemleri için ise  "Havalimanı, 3. Köprü, Kanal İstanbul, metro, metrobüs ve tüneller istemeyen gericilerin yanında yer almam mümkün değil" ifadelerini kullandı. 

  

İbrahim Tatlıses: Ahmet Kaya’nın saldırıya maruz kaldığı gecede ödül alan isimleren biri.  

  

Yıllar sonra o gece için kendisine yöneltilen eleştirilere, 'Ne zaman ki Ahmet Kaya ile alakalı bir şey yazsam bazı artistler 'sen de oradaydın' diyor. Ben orada değildim. Orada olsam çatal atar mıyım, salak mısınız? Evet ben de o gece ödül aldım, almaz olaydım. Saat 11'de Taksim'deki Maksim Gazinosu'nda sahneden indim. Oraya gittim. Orada öğrendim beyefendiler. Her seferinde ben anlatmaktan bıktım, sizler beni yormaktan bıkmadınız. Hangi şerefsiz beni orada görmüşse ben hazırım bedel ödemeye, ya siz? Vallahi yoruldum, billahi yoruldum. Merak etmeyin Ahmet'imi sizden daha çok severdim. Gerçi niye anlatıyorsam... Gülten kardeşim kimdir bilir.” diye cevap verdi. 

  

Gezi Parkı eylemlerinde Hükümet kanadında yer alan Tatlıses ayrıca sanat camiasından gelecek tepkilere hazır olduğunun mesajını böyle verdi: Varsın yalaka desinler... 

  

İbrahim Tatlıses, Gezi Parkı eylemiyle ilgili kendisine yöneltilen eleştirilere Twitter hesabından "Bu gencecik civanlara bir şey olmasın, bütün arzum ve isteğim budur. Varsın yalaka olayım, ne var ki bunda? Keşke elimden bir şeyler gelse de yapsam, ancak dua ediyorum. Annenizi, babanızı, ailenizi düşünüyorsanız; sizlerden özellikle rica ediyorum: Evlerinize dönün. Verdiğiniz mesajlar inanın ki alınmıştır." çağrısı yaptı. 

  

O gece hep bir ağızdan 10. Yıl Marşı ve ‘Bir Başkadır Benim Memleketim’ şarkısını söyleyen koroda yer alan Özcan Deniz, Ebru Gündeş, Emel Sayın, Ferdi Tayfur gibi pek çok isim Gezi eylemlerine destek vermediler. Yine aynı koroda yer alan Fatih Ürek ise Gezi eylemlerine neden katılmadığı sorulduğunda  "Ben o  tür şeylere girmek istemedim. Zaten mizacım uygun değil" dedi! 

  

O gece orada olup Ahmet Kaya’ya tepki göstermeyen sanatçılar da vardı. Edip Akbayram ve Selda Bağcan gibi. O isimler de Gezi Parkı eylemlerine verdikleri desteği açıkça dile getirdiler.  

  

ASLANTUĞ: BİZİM SORUNUMUZ DÜRÜSTLÜK

  

O gece Savaş Ay’la birlikte Ahmet Kaya’ya siper olan iki isimden biri olan Mehmet Aslantuğ ise yıllar sonra şöyle söylüyordu katıldığı bir programda: “Bizim en büyük derdimiz şudur. Dürüst olmak ya da olmamak. Türk olmak, Kürt olmak, inançlı olmak, ateist olmak meselesi değil. İnsanı bağlayan tek şey vardır. Dürüst olmak ya da olmamak. O gün vicdanlarını, ya da akıllarını kapıda bırakanalr bambaşka cümleler kullanıyorlar. Açılım kahvaltısında da gördüm. O gün orada bambaşka aymazlıkta olanların bir kısmı, o gün orada bambaşka sözler söylediler.”
