Europe Against Turkey

Europe Against Turkey

NATO's Secretary-General Mr. Jens Stoltenberg urged the countries of Austria and Turkey on Friday, March 10, 2017 to resolve a diplomatic dispute.

Turkey, a NATO ally, has withdrawn from some alliance participation - mostly military training - saying the move is aimed only at Austria.

"It is a very unfortunate situation and it means some cooperation programs can't be launched," Stoltenberg told reporters during a visit to the Danish capital city of Copenhagen.

Austria, which is not a NATO member but cooperates with the alliance, led calls last year to halt Turkey's European Union accession talks.  The capital of Austria, Vienna has also spoken out against Turkish politicians holding rallies in European countries.

"It's a bilateral situation between Turkey and Austria and we strongly urge them to solve it, so that it won't have negative consequences for the cooperation," Mr. Stoltenberg said.

The diplomatic tensions predate a current escalation with other European countries like Germany and Netherlands but as fellow NATO members Turkey cannot block cooperation with them.

Turkish President Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdogan has compared Germany and the Netherlands to fascists and Nazis for stopping Turkish politicians from rallying to promote a referendum granting him sweeping new powers.  Mr. Erdogan on Thursday said Dutch Prime Minister Mr. Mark Rutte had lost the friendship of Ankara (capital city of Turkey) after the diplomatic row.

NATO officials told Reuters that the blocking also affected other countries that cooperate with the alliance but are not members.  Separately, Austrian tabloid newspaper Oesterreich said its website was brought down on Friday morning by a cyber attack "from Turkey", the latest in a series of similar incidents that appear to be connected to Vienna's spat with Ankara.

Let us monitor this situation between Europe and Turkey.

14 in a Row for Trabzonspor

14 in a Row for Trabzonspor

Trabzonspor is a soccer club from Turkey and is currently on a '14 game unbeaten' streak in European competition.

The club finished on top of the 'J Group' in this seasons UEFA Europa Cup League, to make it to the last 32 teams in the competition.

The last 'loss' in European competition for Trabzonspor was on February 23, 2012, 675 days ago, when they lost to PSV Eindhoven of Holland, 4 - 1.

In the 14 game streak, the club has 9 wins and 5 ties; which is a definite success for a club from Turkey.

The club is trying to surpass the record held by Galatasaray of Istanbul, Turkey, who hold the record of '15 games unbeaten streak' in Europe.

The next game is on February 20, 2014, against a very difficult team of Juventus, from Turin, Italy.

Below, are the last 14 games for Tranzonspor:

Trabzonspor - Videoton, 0-0
Videoton - Trabzonspor, 0-0 (On penalty kicks won 4 - 2)

Trabzonspor - Derry City, 4-2
Derry City - Trabzonspor, 0-3

Dinamo Minsk - Trabzonspor, 0-1
Trabzonspor - Dinamo Minsk, 0-0

Kukesi - Trabzonspor, 0-2
Trabzonspor - Kukesi, 3-1

Apollon Limassol - Trabzonspor, 1-2
Lazio - Trabzonspor, 3-3
Trabzonspor - Legia Varsova, 2-0
Legia Varsova - Trabzonspor, 0-2
Trabzonspor - Apollon Limassol, 4-2
Lazio - Trabzonspor, 0-0

I wish Trabzonspor continued success in Europe, and do wish they succeed in eliminating Juventus from the competition to make it to the 'last 16' of the 'UEFA Europa Cup League', and break the record, mentioned above.

Thank you for visiting,

The Free Fall

The Free Fall

The markets today had one of its worth days.  The loss was over 2%.

The main reason for the bad day was the worldwide debt, particularly Greece's debt.  Also, the markets are waiting for the decision of this country, wether Greece will stay or leave the European Union.  We all need to wait the outcome.

Check out the numbers below:

3rd Place

3rd Place

This years uefa champions league is well underway and after 3 games, Galatasaray SK is sitting in last place in their group, which has the following teams, from first to last:
Dortmund, 9 points
Arsenal, 6 points,
Anderlecht, 1 point, &
Gala, 1 point.

The first two teams make it to the last 16 of the champions league.  The third place team goes to the uefa cup competition, and will be in the last 32 teams in this competition.  And the last place team will be eliminated from European soccer competition for this season.

I would recommend to Gala to really try to finish this years competition in third place, therefore they could continue  their journey in uefa cup competition, instead of the champions league.  Let us be honest, Gala is not very strong this year and they are not firing in all cylinders.

The uefa cup competition will be better suited for Gala this year as the teams in this competition are more likely competitors for Gala.

The last 3 games remaining for Gala are:
Borussia Dirtmund, at Germany,
Anderlecht, in Belgium, &
Arsenal, in Turkey.

I cannot see the team get even 1 point from the Germany game.  However, they should be able to secure a minimum of 1 point from Belgium.  The last game will surely need to be a win.  Therefore, Gala will hopefully finish with 5 points.

Their direct competitor will be Anderletch.  The Belgium sides last 3 games are:
Arsenal, at home,
Gala, at home, &
Dortmund, in Germany.

I cannot see Anderlecht winning or tiring with Arsenal and the game against Borusia Dortmunf will be a definite win for  Dortmund.

This is my analysis of this group within the champions league, therefore, from first to last, here below is the standing after 6 games:
Borussia Dortmund,
Arsenal,
Galatasaray, &
Anderletch.

What do you think?

Sincerely.

Champagne and Campania

Champagne and Campania

I wanted to know why the 'sparkling white wine' is called Champagne; and did some research and found the following interesting information.

   Champagne, France

The name 'Champagne' comes from the Latin word 'Campania'.  It is referred to the similarities between the rolling hills of the province of Champagne, located in northeast France and the Italian countryside of Campania located south of Rome.

   Champagne, France

Both Champagne and Campania are historic provinces and locations in both France and Italy, respectively.

   Campania, Italy

However, now Champagne is best known for the 'sparkling white wine' that bears its name; instead of history packed locations.

   Campania, Italy

I have included a few pictures of both Champagne and Campania; beautiful places to visit/live.

Galatasaray Basketball Team

Galatasaray Basketball Team

'Galatasaray Odeabank' became the first Turkish female basketball team to win a European title, after a big victory over arch rival of Fenerbahce on April 13, 2014.

       the champions

Amazing achievement for Turkish Women's Basketball as two teams from the city of Istanbul, played in the European Final.

Galatasaray played to a 69 - 58 victory over Fenerbahce in a game played in the city of Ekaterinburg, Russia, to claim the Euro-league Women's title in a historic match for Turkish basketball.

Alba Torrens of Galatasaray scored nine points along with her four rebounds and six assists in the final, and therefore was named the Most Valuable Player of the Final Eight, in the Euro-league.

“This is a team victory,” Coach Memnun said.

Galatasaray shocked overwhelming title favorite UMMC Ekaterinburg in the semifinal on April 11, 2014, while Fenerbahce beat Tango Bourges for a place in the final game.

Incredible achievement in Turkish basketball.

Congratulations to both clubs.

Elimination of Trabzonspor

Elimination of Trabzonspor

Trabzonspor, of Turkey has been eliminated from UEFA Europa Cup League by Juventus of Italy.

History and Victory

History and Victory

“History, is written by the victor”

Winston Churchill

So very true quote eh?

Ben here

View from the Pera Hill

View from the Pera Hill

I would like to share the transcript of the seventh speech of mine, with some alterations made to it over the years.  This speech was given to my peers in January of 2012; for our Toastmasters group.

Here it is below.

Toastmasters, Speech number 7

View from the Pera Hill

On the communication manual it states that project 7 should be a “Research Your Topic” speech.  I actually did not know we were following the manual this close, really? Therefore thought back and realized that my last two speeches were not exactly done as the manual wanted and I want to correct this today.

Speech 5 guideline states that this should be a something that has an element of “Your Body Speaks”.  I definitely did not do that. I remember, I just stood out here and therefore, I would like to show you my delayed reaction…”Ohhh my, a TV!!” and “I cannot believe my eyes!".  (Make like your hands are in the air and start jumping around).  For those of you who missed my speech 5, this was a speech about the first time a Television was brought into our home, when I was only 5 or 6 years old.

Speech 6 guideline states that it should have “Vocal Variety”. Again, I did not do that.  But, I want to correct this and here is my impression of, Lets see if you can guess this character actor? “Ahhh, A make him an offer, he can’t refuse…”  (Say it with an Italian accent) Anyone? The answer is Marlon Brando, starring in the oscar winning role of the The Godfather.

Most of you do not know, but I love to write.  I have over a dozen short stories in my native language.  I am in the process of slowly converting these stories into English.  My goal one day is to take a long leave of absence from work and try to chase this dream of mine to convert the stories into English and also expand these short stories into novels.

My speech today is titled “The view from the Pera Hill”.  I am not referring to Pisa in Italy.  I might add that, that would be a nice place to visit, right?  It would be nice to see the Leaning Tower, can you imagine standing by the leaning tower and having your partner take your picture while you are doing this (Make like you are holding up the tower).  Also, did you guys know that Pisa has less than 90,000 residences, but over a million tourists visit that city each year? That is over 10 times the population. Think about that. If we use the percentage calculation for Edmonton, that would mean that if there is 1 million residences living here (Give or take), we would have 10 million tourists visiting here. Imagine the traffic? Yuk!!

Also, my speech today is a just a very small part of one of my short stories.  The story is based in the year 1453.  This is a very important year.  It is said that “History, is written by the victor”, (Say this in an English accent), that is suppose to be an English accent by the way.  Can anyone guess who said that very famous phrase? Winston Churchill is the answer.

I do not like wars, I am absolutely against them. “Wars are no solution to peace!” Therefore, I took an event which was a very important date in the history of Europe.

The concurring of Constantinople.
The fall of the old Rome.
The end of the Byzantium Empire.
The beginning of the mighty Ottoman Empire.
My birth city, the city on the seven hills.

Therefore, what I did was that since the city was going to fall to the New lions of Anatolia. I dreamt up a way for not one person to die while the ruling hands changed in this city.

I describe the conversation between Fatih Sultan Mehmed; the young 21 year old conquer of the city that backs onto the Golden Horn body of water.  A body of water which holds 3000 years of treasures.  And the conversation is with a 74 year old Priest Patrick Gennadius Skolarious, who lives in the St. Aposteli Church.  A Church which has a secret item buried deep in the catacombs below it.  And, whoever has possession of this item, which dates back to the City of Jerusalem, and prior to that, to the town of Bethlehem.  The item once owned by a poor Sheppard, we all know who I am referring to.

Whoever has possession of this item, would have his one wish granted.  This conversation occurred between the two characters at 3 am on May 25, 1453 in the wooded parts of the Pera Hill on the East/North side of the Golden Horn body of water, overlooking the treasure below, the walled city of Constantinople.

The trade occurs which saves every person, not one drop of blood spills, and everyone’s happy.

I am running out of time and therefore leave it to your imagine of how the two characters meet and communicate.  How one is at the prime of his life, full of brute force and the other advanced in years, full of wisdom share.

Thank you for reading.

Scourge of God

Scourge of God

I heard the quote 'Scourge of God' and wondered why such a comment could be made, and for 'who' it was said; therefore decided to do some research.

Do you know what 'Scourge' means?

Scourge means 'a person that causes great deal of trouble or suffering'.

This quote was used first for 'Attila the Hun'.

Attila the Hun and his faithful Warriors developed the skills of 'Battle' at the territories once called 'Scythia'.  Today, Scythia is the areas within the countries of Kazakhstan and south-east Russia.

Attila the Hun and his Troops scared the citizens of the Roman Empire, since these Warriors would attack the borders of the Empire.

The fear was evident with citizens when they came into contact with these Warriors, who had tattooed bodies and knotted long hair; and the Romans would wonder and try to comprehend how God could allow these Pagans to destroy their once-mighty Empire.

Therefore, the citizens of the Empire called Attila the Hun, the 'Scourge of God'.

Attila the Hun conquered vast lands in Asia and Europe from the Roman and other empires, over a thousand years ago.

You might be wondering who was Atilla, the Hun.

The Huns were a Nomadic tribe from the territories of modern day Mongolia; with ancestor ties to the Turk-manic tribes.

I thought it was an interesting story and I decided to share this today.

Thank you,

Ben

Roaming Charges

Roaming Charges

what is 'Roaming'?

We all have cell phones now days, and the term 'Roaming' means connecting to 'cell phone network / service' in a different location then your 'home' service area.  The term originates from 'Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) terminology use.

Obviously, as soon as we require service, outside of our home area, this will be an extra charge by your cell phone provider.

I read an article and wanted to share the highlights of the future changes that are coming in 'Europe' and then hopefully in 'North America'.

When a person living in the city of London, travels to Paris, which is only 2.5 hours away by train, the 'Roaming' charges are as following:
- 20 minute call to London from Paris costs $10 Canadian Dollars,
- Texting a photograph costs $1.25 CD.

Due to the high costs of this service, business is declining for telecommunications companies, since consumers are using their phones less, and even shutting off these devices.

There is a proposal in the works to eliminate 'Roaming' charges by the year 2016, in parts of Europe.  I look forward to the elimination of this charge in Canada (North America) as well.

We will wait and see, what the future has in-store for us consumers.
