The Best Thing for Being Sad

The Best Thing for Being Sad

“The best thing for being sad," said Merlin,

     Merlin

"is to learn something.  That's the only thing that never fails.  You may grow old and trembling in your anatomies, you may lie awake at night listening to the disorder of your veins, you may miss your only love, you may see the world about you devastated by evil lunatics, or know your honour trampled in the sewers of baser minds.  There is only one thing for it then — to learn.  Learn why the world wags and what wags it.  That is the only thing which the mind can never exhaust, never alienate, never be tortured by, never fear or distrust, and never dream of regretting.  Learning is the only thing for you.  Look what a lot of things there are to learn.”

     T H White

This passage is found in the book 'The Once and Future King'.

Kibar Feyzo, Hadi Yine Seyredin

Kibar Feyzo, Hadi Yine Seyredin

Adile Nasit (Sakine Anney),
Erdal Ozyacilar (Zulfo),
Bahri Ates (Topal Hoca)

Elveda Katya with Caner

Elveda Katya with Caner

Elveda Katya (Farewell Katya) is a movie which tells the story of a young girl named Katya, who is from the country of Georgia, she is played by Anna Andrusenko.

Katya is a girl who has been brought up in an orphanage in the city of Batumi, located in Georgia.

Katya, learns that her father is a sea captain from the city of Trabzon, located in Turkey.

Katya travels to the city of Trabzon to find her father, and the story begins.  The father is played by the legendary actor of Turkish cinema, Kadir Inanir.

This is a very good movie and I will leave it with that, about the movie.  However, I wanted to write further about a character in this movie.  He plays the son of Kadir Inanir, his name is Caner Cindoruk.

Even though all the characters in the movie did a very good job, I believe Caner's portrayal of the son taking a stand against his father and accepting Katya as his sister was well done.  I believe he stole the scenes that he was in, and I for one, enjoyed watching this young Turkish actor.

I have attached a YouTube link of the movie, here it is below, make time to watch it in the near future.

The 2006 BBC version of Dracula

The 2006 BBC version of Dracula

The 2006 BBC version of Dracula is loosely based on Bram Stoker’s novel.  I watched this movie over the weekend, and I must state, I was thrilled with this 'different' adaptation of the famous novel.

I was truly entertained and was fascinated that the movie deviates from the original Bram Stoker storyline, and concentrates on tangents of its own, which obviously changes the characters and their motivations significantly.

          Lord Arthur Holmwood

The movie brings with it the 'new' idea of 'Syphilis' and how the character Lord Arthur Holmwood can cure his 'deathly' condition by bringing a mysterious man, a Count Dracula, from Transylvania, to London.

I was very much interested at the 'good' acting from all the characters, plus, I liked seeing 'new' and 'fresh' faces on these 'old' characters.

          Dr Steward

In summary, I would recommend to everyone to make time to watch this version of Dracula.  There are memorable events and scenes in this production; plus the performances are all generally good; however the below actors especially were entertaining to watch:

Marc Warren - Count Dracula
Dan Stevens - Lord Arthur Holmwood
Tom Burke - Dr. John Seward

The Brilliant Sergio Leone

The Brilliant Sergio Leone

The 'Briliant' man, who created his own movie-making brand of epic films, with rich characters, plus who went on to create a hand full of films in the 1960's, so very exceptional, that the films earned their own generic moniker;

'Spaghetti Westerns'

         Brilliant man directing the legend

The films listed below were initially deemed as nihilistic and violent;

A Fistful of Dollars
For a Few Dollars More
and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

However, they galvanized the genre of 'Spaghetti Westerns', turning Mr Leone into an international directorial star, and earning the films religious following by viewers from every corner of our universe.

Films by Mr Leone

        Beautiful picture

1959, The Last Days of Pompeii (Mario Bonnard is the credited director; Sergio Leone served as assistant director and reportedly, however took over completion of the film when Mr Bonnard became severely ill during production)

1961, The Colossus of Rhodes (Mr Leone's first film)

1964, A Fistful of Dollars (1st part of the Dollars Trilogy)

1965, For a Few Dollars More (2nd part of the Dollars Trilogy)

1966, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Final part of the Dollars Trilogy)

      Another graet picture

1968, Once Upon a Time in the West

1971, Duck, You Sucker!

1973, My Name is Nobody (Producer, uncredited co-director)

1975, A Genius, Two Partners and a Dupe (Uncredited producer, co-director)

1984, Once Upon a Time in America

My sincere respect goes out to this man.

The Deer Hunter

The Deer Hunter

What a movie?

Have you watched it?

I'll describe the plot of this culturally rich movie.

         the buddies

The Deer Hunter is a 1978 American film about the social troubles associated with soldiers returning from the Vietnam War.

This is a drama film directed by Michael Cimino.
Robert de Niro and his friends

The film is about a trio of Russian American steelworkers and their troubles in the Vietnam War.

The film stars:
Robert De Niro,
Christopher Walken,
John Savage,
John Cazale,
Meryl Streep, and
George Dzundza.

The director Mr Cimino's bold and powerful 'epic movie' goes from a blue-collar small town outside of Pittsburg to the 'hell' resembling Vietnam, in just one night.
          the look

Ribert De Niro holds it together powerfully.

Christopher Walken, Meryl Streep and John Savage are absolutely unforgettable.

I watched this movie again and was surprised how much I enjoyed this entertaining and sophisticated movie.

I completed some research and come by the below information.

' In 1996, 'The Deer Hunter' was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" '

A classical film that should be watched again to witness the change in 'men' after returning home from 'War'

Riddle me This

Riddle me This

A 'Riddle' is a question or statement asked; which is intentionally phrased so as to require  a 'thoughtful' and 'smart' answer or meaning.

I watched the movie 'Hobbit, An Unexpected Journey' and thoroughly enjoyed the brilliant 'riddle' exchange between Bilbo Baggins and Gollum.

I wanted to share with you today, the witty riddles uttered by these individuals.

    Gollum

Here it is below:

Gollum Riddles:
What has roots as nobody sees,
Is taller than trees,
Up, up it goes,
And yet never grows?
A: Mountain

Bilbo Baggins Riddles:
Voiceless it cries,
Wingless flutters,
Toothless bites,
Mouthless mutters.
A: Wind

Gollum Riddles:
It cannot be seen, cannot be felt,
Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt.
It lies behind stars and under hills,I
And empty holes it fills.
It comes out first and follows after,
Ends life, kills laughter.
A: Dark

Bilbo Baggins Riddles:
Alive without breath,
As cold as death;
Never thirsty, ever drinking,
All in mail never clinking.
A: Fish

Gollum Riddles:
This thing all things devours;
Birds, beasts, trees, flowers;
Gnaws iron, bites steel;
Grinds hard stones to meal;
Slays king, ruins town,
And beats mountain down.
A: Time

Well with every game, there needs to be a winner and a loser.  In this exchange of riddles, It was determined that if Bilbo Baggins answers correctly, then Gollum has to show him the way out of the tunnel inside the mountain.  If Bilbo Baggins loses, Gollum gets to eat him.  I will leave it to you to guess who wins this riddle exchange.

Prophet Noah

Prophet Noah

The movie titled 'Noah' starring Russell Crowe as the Prophet, who saves the lives of a pair of all creatures on earth, is almost ready for release in the theatres.  Unfortunately, the following countries of Qatar, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates have already 'banned' the viewing of the movie.  The reason given is that, the director Darren Aronofsky’s movie is banned due to 'Religious Grounds'.

          Russell Crowe as Prophet Noah

The official news statement from these countries states: ‘The movie contradicts the teachings of Islam'.

My questions to the 'Leaders' of these countries are very simple,
'Are your citizens not able to comprehend a movie without the State interfering in their lives and minds?
Can these citizen be able to freely think on their own?
Are we as world citizens, not passed the rhetoric used, and be able to form our own opinions?'

Censorship needs to end, sooner then later in these parts of the world.

Thank you for reading,

Ben

Beast with Two Backs

Beast with Two Backs

We have all read the the play/book titled 'Othello' by Shakespeare, one time or prior.  I remember reading this play in High School for my English 30 class.  I remember that I rather enjoyed reading and afterwards, writing an essay about this famous play.  I wish I would have kept my old document/essay, as I could remind myself today, what I 'focused' in the writing about in my youth, about this play.

Over the years, I have watched 'Othello' in a live-play once, and in a movie a couple of times.

The other evening, I was enjoying the company of a few friends, when I heard the expression 'Beast with two backs' lipped by one of friends, who was half-intoxicated.  I made a mental note of this expression, as I had heard and/or read it before, but could not remember when/where, I had heard this.

(Do you know what the expression 'Beast with two backs' means? I would like to explain what this means, but let me do this at the tale-end of my writing today).

A few weeks went by and I remembered the 'expression' again and decided to 'google' it.  I was truly fascinated to see that the expression had originated from a play/book, which I enjoyed reading, however, never comprehended the expression when I read the play in 'High School', or watched the play 'Live', and finally watched the movie of the 'Play'.

I finally read the play again and wanted to bring to the attention of everyone the 'confrontational' conversation between Roderigo and Iago, where the expression was authored.  Below, is the lead-up to the expression:

-------------

Roderigo:
Most grave Brabantio, In simple and pure soul I come to you.

Iago:
Zounds, sir, you are one of those that will not serve God, if the devil bid you.  Because we come to do you service and you think we are ruffians, you'll have your daughter covered with a Barbary horse; you'll have your nephews neigh to you; you'll have coursers for cousins and gennets for germans.

Brabantio:
What profane wretch art thou?

Iago:
I am one, sir, that comes to tell you your daughter and the Moor are now making the beast with two backs.

Brabantio:
Thou art a villain.

Iago:
You are a senator.

Brabantio:
This thou shalt answer; I know thee,

-------------

Fascinating scene, I thought.

Now, let me explain briefly, what 'Beast with two backs' mean, even though I imagine you know what this means.

'Beast with two backs' is a metaphor used to describe two lovers, who are in the act of 'love making'.

I confess, I did not 'catch' this expression in High School, I wish I would have.

Hope you enjoyed today's topic, try another of my writings,

Add me to your circle, if you like, I'll add color to any gathering.

Thank you for visiting, leave a comment ehhh,
